PhD Studentships – Innovative Nuclear Decommissioning

The University of Manchester – The Centre for Innovative Nuclear Decommissioning

Applications for September 2017 are now open

The Centre for Innovative Nuclear Decommissioning is a partnership between the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool, Lancaster and Cumbria with Sellafield Ltd and the National Nuclear Laboratory. Its mission is to innovate and deliver future engineering leaders, supporting the UK’s nuclear decommissioning programme in west Cumbria, i.e. Sellafield.

The centre is located at the National Nuclear Laboratory’s state-of-the-art facilities
in Workington, Cumbria, which is on the edge of the Lake District National Park. Graduate studentships, leading to a Ph.D., are available across a diverse range of engineering and scientific disciplines, with opportunities for Graduates in Mechanical, Materials, Electrical and Chemical Engineering or Scientific related disciplines.

All Ph.D. students will
be embedded within a combined industry/academic team and focus on innovative projects addressing complex challenges, such as the development of robotic systems, sensing and instrumentation, fluid flow and decontamination processes.

We welcome applications from graduates who have,
or expect to obtain, a good engineering degree (first class or upper second). To
be eligible for a studentship, you must be a UK citizen or
a European Union national due to funding restrictions. Sellafield, with an ageing demographic, is currently spending around £2bn a year and has a programme that lasts in excess of 100 years that will provide opportunities and challenges for high quality engineers for many years to come.

If you are interested in applying for any of the available PhD studentships please contact us at innovative.nuclear.decommissioning@nnl.co.uk

The nature of this programme means that we must comply with the Government’s protective security procedures. That means that all students will be subject to a base line standard security check.
