Summary

The central focus of this research is the conception and commercial manufacture of sustainable biomaterials as a substitute for the conventional pernicious & resource-intensive materials used by the garment industry. Emphasis has been placed on preserving, and even enhancing, the performance of the alternatives in question. This is to maximise the practicality and efficacity of these new innovations. By ensuring they meet and exceed the capacity of traditional textiles, we are able to promote compatibility and easy integration within existing supply chains and the industry as a whole. From the initial textile concept to its fabrication, a holistic perspective is imperative to ensure that the positive impact of these substitutes is fully realised, and to avoid a material’s properties being compromised by a problematic supply chain or production process.
