Summary
Synthetic fibres have been widely used in the fashion industry due to their ability to create various fabric textures and mimic natural fibres at a lower cost. These materials have been proven to be unsustainable due to their non-biodegradability and the harm that they pose to the environment and our health. However, it is important to avoid regrettable substitutions, in which materials are replaced with another that introduce additional problems. Examples of this include the use of regenerated cellulose and bio-based fibres as substitutes, which causes similar harm as synthetic fibres. This report explores viable alternatives and solutions to semi and wholly synthetic fibres including further innovations in biomaterials, bacterial cellulose, and the enhancement of natural fibre production process.
