ChemSoc: Why Manchester?
Student experience 1 October 2020
Find out why the members of the Chemistry Society (ChemSoc) chose Manchester to study Chemistry.
Paige Halil (President)
UoM first caught my eye for a silly reason, I really liked the colours of the graduation gowns! However, we have a leading Chemistry department and for me, the course structure made so much sense and was easily the best out of my UCAS choices. I visited Manchester 3 times before I started (once for my interview) and every time I fell more and more in love with the city and knew it was where I wanted to call home.
Ryan Beaumount (Gen Sec)
Moving to a vibrant and growing city was an ambition of mine from a child. Having never experienced the life a city such as Manchester could offer coming from a small town, it appealed to me profoundly. The fact that UoM is a noteworthy University also paired in quite nicely.
Amrita Chattopadhyay (Treasurer)
I came to Manchester because of the high quality of teaching delivered by staff who are at the forefront of their research and due to the state of the art facilities provided by the university, such as fully functional laboratories and newly refurbished study spaces on campus. I also really liked the extremely diverse atmosphere on campus and really wanted the experience of meeting people from varying cultures across the world.
Elena Wright (Education Sec)
Growing up, I’d frequently visit my brother whilst he was at UoM. I quickly fell in love with the city and all it has to offer, so I just had to choose it myself for my studies. The city is so diverse, and I’m yet to meet someone you can’t get on with in Manchester, to this day I’m still finding exciting new places to explore!!
Charlotte Cross (Sports Sec)
Coming from Cheshire, I had visited Manchester many times before choosing to study here. I loved the diversity of the city and the range of opportunities available, such as sport and entertainment venues. I chose UoM because of the great reputation for chemistry and employability. I also liked the ability to choose from a wide range of optional modules outside the chemistry department.
Charlotte Istance (Inclusion Officer)
I came to Manchester for a really simple reason. I was visiting a different uni and I asked if I could do radiochemistry for my masters research. They said “no, you’ll have to go to Manchester for that”… and here I am.
Rohit Ganger (Social Sec)
I chose Manchester because I loved the city and the wonderful people I met on the chemistry open day. Also the lecturers were really passionate about the research they were doing and very helpful on the open day.
Mia Nesbeth (Social Sec)
I came to Manchester because I like the city as the people are friendly and there is a lot to do, and the university seemed like it would give me a lot of career opportunities, great facilities and support me in my future career.
Kai Spratt (Social Sec)
I chose Manchester because when I came here for my interview I saw how great the uni and city was. The facilities were so much better than any other uni I visited (also fresh meat was filmed at Manchester uni so how could I not choose to come here).
