Work Placement Diary: Camery Ma Yii Earn – Post 3
Student experience 29 November 2019
Camery is a third year student, currently studying on an industrial placement as part of the MChem (Hons) Chemistry with Industrial Experience programme. In a post written early November 2019, she is sharing how she is getting on with her project and what she is looking forward to.
It has been over 3 months since the start of my placement with FiberLean Technologies. Fortunately, my R&D project has been progressing well and sort of reaching its first checkpoint. My supervisor, a few colleagues and I will be travelling to another UK city late November to conduct a trial with an external organisation which has specialised equipment. The trial is important and likely to define the scope of my project for the coming months. I am nervous but excited for that!
In the meantime, I have been consistently working on my draft university placement report. This includes consolidating and interpreting the data, presenting it in appropriate charts and reading many relevant research articles for the background theories. It was kind of daunting at first because I have not written such a long scientific report before. However, it wasn’t that bad once I got into it and I have also received much guidance from my industrial supervisor.
My academic supervisor from UoM visited me last month and has given me a few useful pieces of advice based on my introductory presentation and lab tour. I find it less stressful to start my report early and add on as I go along, instead of leaving it to the final few months of the placement (don’t forget there are also *inhale* …exams). However, this really depends on the nature of placement project that you do. I also know some students aren’t immediately assigned a project upon job commencement. Therefore, be at peace and don’t compare too much 😊
Other than that, the first-semester organic distance-learning module content has been okay and the podcast system has been working excellent. I am low-key looking forward to Christmas as the company is doing a Xmas lunch and later I am also taking a week off for a trip to Paris. Till then, take care!
Cheers,
Camery
