Work Placement Diary: Camery Ma Yii Earn – post 1
Chemistry in the real world Student experience 10 July 2019
Welcome to the first of our Work Placement Diaries, written by third year students as they go out into industry.
Today, we’re catching up with Camery Ma Yii Earn, who is about to start the third year of MChem (Hons) Chemistry with Industrial Experience. Camery is an international student from Malaysia and you can read more about her journey to The University of Manchester in her International Student Profile.
Where are you doing your placement, can you tell us a little bit about the company?
I am doing my placement year with FiberLean Technologies Ltd, which is a joint venture between two industrial minerals companies: Imerys and Omya. FiberLean Technologies is the leading global producer of Micro-Fibrillated Cellulose that has applications in papermaking and packaging.
I will be working as a Research & Development Chemist.
How did you get your placement?
The vacancy was advertised on Blackboard. To apply, I submitted a copy of my CV, a tailored cover letter and attended a selection interview at the company site.
What support did you get while you were preparing for the placement?
The School regularly informed us of new industrial placement vacancies through Blackboard, with company description, deadline and application method clearly stated. Since first year, we have attended presentations where we were briefed on what to do. We also got connected to placement students of the last batch and there was meet-and-greet sessions where we could ask them more specific questions. We have had a few one-to-one appointments (both mandatory and optional) with the career consultant and employability intern who checked on our application progress and offered help wherever necessary (eg. CV check/mock interview).
Camery will be starting her placement on 22nd July and we look forward to hearing how she is getting on while she is there.

Really helpful post!
Could I please also know whether as an international student, if we are undertaking a placement year, we should change the Tier 4 VISA as it only allows 20 hours maximum work during university time.
Thank you!
Best of luck too Camery!! Wish you the best!!
