World Parkinson’s Day: how our research could speed up diagnosis
Research and impact 11 April 2019
On World Parkinson’s Day, we take a look at research carried out here at the School of Chemistry that has the potential to transform Parkinson’s diagnosis.
Currently, there is no definitive test that can be used to diagnose Parkinson’s disease – a degenerative disorder of the central nervous syndrome. Instead, a series of investigations are carried out before a GP will conclude that Parkinson’s is the probable cause of a patient’s symptoms.
But all this could soon change, which means those with the disease may be able to get a definitive diagnosis up to ten years earlier than is currently the case. And it’s all thanks to Joy Milne, Honorary Lecturer at The University of Manchester, and her super nose.
You can read more about the breakthrough over on The Hub.
