achievements so far include a BEng in Electronics and Electrical Engineering (dual award) from the University of Glasgow and UESTC China and a Master of Science by Research from the University of Edinburgh in Computer Science. This last year, she has also completed two semesters of taught modules from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/study\/masters\/courses\/list\/20967\/msc-robotics\/\">MSc Robotics<\/a> programme at The University of Manchester, during the first year of the RAINZ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.se.manchester.ac.uk\/study\/postgraduate-research\/degrees-and-projects\/centres-for-doctoral-training\/\">Centre for Doctoral Training<\/a> (CDT) programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jinwei is now about to take her next steps in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainz-cdt.ac.uk\/\">RAINZ CDT<\/a>, beginning the research component of her PhD in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at The University of Manchester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Researching Theory of Mind in human-robot interaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jinwei\u2019s research will focus on Theory of Mind in robotics, investigating how robots can understand human intentions through embodied cognitive and affective computing, with the goal of enabling more natural and interpretable human\u2013robot interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-c7ebd8d6 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-top:0;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:0;grid-template-columns:auto 49%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTheory of Mind, in Psychology terms, means humans\u2019 abilities to attribute mental states, such as beliefs, intentions and emotions to other people, it&#8217;s basically how we understand each other.<br><br>&#8220;By observing you, I can understand how you\u2019re feeling today, your beliefs, what your intentions are and so on. We want to apply that to robotics, so that in human-robot interaction, designed robots can provide better performance and a better experience when they interact with humans.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/Jinwei-Zhang-Stood-Beside-Rainz-Banner-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7853 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/Jinwei-Zhang-Stood-Beside-Rainz-Banner-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/Jinwei-Zhang-Stood-Beside-Rainz-Banner-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/Jinwei-Zhang-Stood-Beside-Rainz-Banner-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/Jinwei-Zhang-Stood-Beside-Rainz-Banner-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/Jinwei-Zhang-Stood-Beside-Rainz-Banner-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/07\/Jinwei-Zhang-Stood-Beside-Rainz-Banner-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few people in the UK work in this area, which is what motivated Jinwei to apply for the RAINZ CDT programme, as her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.se.manchester.ac.uk\/study\/postgraduate-research\/supervisors\/\">supervisor<\/a> is one of the few experts in Theory of Mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Combining engineering, computer science and psychology in PhD research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jinwei&#8217;s research project is multidisciplinary, and her varied background has helped her develop skills across multiple fields which will now help with her research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of a cohort of researchers, she says it&#8217;s interesting to collaborate with people from other fields, and that she values sharing ideas and supporting each other with different aspects of robotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s interesting to hear people\u2019s opinions from different aspects, according to their own technical backgrounds,\u201d Jinwei says, explaining that this has been particularly useful during the research sprint they recently completed as a group, allowing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainz-cdt.ac.uk\/\">RAINZ cohort<\/a> to benefit from their range of experience and specialisms to complete research projects together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-base-color has-accent-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-1\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--x-small);padding-right:0;padding-left:0\"><blockquote><p>\u201cI have a multidisciplinary background. I come from an electronic and electrical engineering background and then I moved to computer science, then my research is related to psychology.\u201d<br><\/p><cite><em>Jinwei Zhang, RAINZ CDT postgraduate researcher<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advice for aspiring robotics PhD researchers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the first thing is to know yourself whether you like doing research before you apply\u201d, Jinwei recommends to anyone thinking about doing a PhD, as well as recommending those curious to do a research internship or a research project first to discover if postgraduate research is something they would enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also highlights that a PhD isn&#8217;t for everyone, depending on personal preferences and interests: \u201cI think people have different expectations of a PhD, and some people are more suited to it. Some people may want to do something more like engineering and not the research on methodologies and theories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Jinwei, however, researching theory is what she loves. After completing her Master of Science by Research degree, she knew this was the path for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building a community within the RAINZ CDT cohort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know that I&#8217;m not alone,\u201d Jinwei says when reflecting on how the CDT has given her a sense of community. She explains that a PhD can be daunting, so starting with a cohort of researchers and starting their training at the same time creates a sense that everyone is in it together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cohort-based learning means RAINZ researchers can all support each other, with Jinwei expressing that she has had a lot of mental support from her fellow researchers during the first year. The first year has mainly involved literature reviews and training, with a bit of research, which has been a great way for Jinwei to ease into the PhD and given her the confidence to start her passionate about her research and says in the future her dream is just \u201cto continue my research, this is my favourite field\u201d, whether that will be in academia or industry, only time will tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She explains as it\u2019s still quite a new field of research there are not many opportunities yet in industry; \u201cpeople and companies are just starting to do this.\u201d Being at the forefront of research in this area is exciting and rewarding and will be interesting to see the developments in this area over the next few years and
