Harvest Festival seems a likely occasion for such a scene, but in Collyhurst, Greater Manchester, they\u2019re cultivating so much more than produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Faculty\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.se.manchester.ac.uk\/connect\/social-responsibility\/#:~:text=accessibility%20(EDIA)%20stories-,Our%20commitment,Maths)%20subjects%20have%20diversity%20challenges.\">Social Responsibility<\/a>&nbsp;team has provided the catalyst for change, allocating Lecturer in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ce.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Chemical Engineering<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/h.aleem\/\">Hosam Aleem<\/a>, the Better World fund to kickstart his budding outreach idea. The investment has begun building bonds and putting down roots at Collyhurst Nursey School, with a promising and innovative community allotment initiative. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Aleem set out with one aim: to bring local people together by sowing a garden of fresh food and reaping a new sustainability culture. For the use of the children, parents, community centres and other local schools, he has been working closely with Collyhurst Nursery Manager, Nicola Burton, to improve the collective sense of belonging, achievement and health equality in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/planters-1024x536.png\" alt=\"Empty planters awaiting soil\" class=\"wp-image-6897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/planters-1024x536.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/planters-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/planters-768x402.png 768w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/planters.png 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Collyhurst resides in the wards of Miles Platting and Harpurhey, which are ranked as some of the most deprived in Manchester. The stats reveal 65% of children live in absolute or relative low-income families and 75% of families live in rented flats or terraced housing. 1\/3 of this accommodation has no outdoor space. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worryingly, 50% of deaths are attributed to diseases linked to poor diet, tobacco and sedentary life, with the life expectancy in Collyhurst 8 and 6 years shorter that the average male or female in England and Manchester, respectively. Not only will this space encourage positive eating behaviours, healthy activity and contact with nature, but it\u2019s purpose is to reduce the potential for issues like conflict and loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the experience so far, Dr Aleem says: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was both rewarding and inspiring to work on the allotment project with Collyhurst nursery. Knowing that one makes a positive impact, no matter how small, on people\u2019s lives, especially children makes the effort all the more worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have also benefited from learning of the many opportunities available, and the people dedicated to help improve the lives of others and care about the environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/soil-1024x536.png\" alt=\"Bags of stacked soil donated to Collyhurst Nursery\" class=\"wp-image-6898\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/soil-1024x536.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/soil-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/soil-768x402.png 768w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/12\/soil.png 1152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Free services and materials have been donated by a host of local businesses. These include gardening consultations with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meen.org.uk\/\">Manchester Environmental Education Network<\/a>&nbsp;(MEEN), compost donations from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/recycleforgreatermanchester.com\/\">Recycle for Greater Manchester<\/a>&nbsp;(R4GM) and delivery of goods and supplies by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.suez.com\/en\/our-offering\/success-stories\/our-references\/sustainable-waste-management-in-greater-manchester\">SUEZ<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s been involvement from local government too, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.manchester.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=194\">Councillor John Flanagan<\/a>&nbsp;of Miles Platting and Newton Health, meeting to discuss the project\u2019s scope for replication in other parts of Manchester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Councillor\u2019s team also offered invaluable information on other potential funding sources. Dr Aleem is now exploring the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.gov.uk\/info\/100003\/people_and_communities\/202\/neighbourhood_investment_funds\">Manchester City Council\u2019s Neighbourhood Investment Fund<\/a>&nbsp;(NIF) in a bid to buy new gardening tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Aleem continues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;All this could not have been possible without the support of The University of Manchester and the opportunities it affords its staff to contribute to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the very beginning of the journey when I became a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.collyhurst.manchester.sch.uk\/page\/governance\/161219\">Governor at Collyhurst Nursery<\/a>&nbsp;through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/connect\/teachers\/school-governors\/#:~:text=Our%20School%20Governor%20Initiative%20(UMSGI,Local%20Authority%20or%20Community%20Governors.\">University\u2019s scheme<\/a>, to the funding I have gratefully received from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.se.manchester.ac.uk\/better-world-funding\/\">Better World Initiative<\/a>.
