There\u2019s a chill in the air and the crunch of leaves underfoot, Manchester is adorned with a kaleidoscope of vibrant crimson and orange hues. In the spirit of Halloween, our friends over at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psi.manchester.ac.uk\/\" id=\"https:\/\/www.psi.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Photon Science Institute<\/a> have honoured the holiday in the best way they know how: using a focused ion beam to create a teeny, tiny pumpkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The creation originates from research conducted in the EPSRC Programme Grant Nanoscale Advanced Materials Engineering. In collaboration with Imperial College London, the team\u2019s work, led by Principal Investigator, <a href=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/richard.curry\" id=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/richard.curry\">Richard Curry<\/a>, uses novel alloys which are heated up before an electric field is applied to exact ions from the tip. From here, they can be separated so there\u2019s only one type of ion coming down the column. They can even distinguish ions of the same element that have different masses, called isotopes. Electrostatic lenses are then used to focus the beam down to lower than 10nm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This technology is paving the way toward the quantum computers of the future which will revolutionise science and innovation. Quantum computers can be used to model how a protein folds for drug discovery and is already being used in cyber-cryptography to increase network security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"965\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/pumpkin-965x1024-1.jpg\" alt=\"A photo of a microscopic pumpkin on an orange background\" class=\"wp-image-5542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/pumpkin-965x1024-1.jpg 965w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/pumpkin-965x1024-1-283x300.jpg 283w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/pumpkin-965x1024-1-768x815.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 965px) 100vw, 965px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating the smallest pumpkin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be thinking: but how on earth do they create something so small \u2013 like the pumpkin? By having an exceedingly small beam, precise control over where the ions are put and control over the ion itself, the team can manage the composition and properties of new materials on the nanoscale. This advanced materials engineering allows for doping of ions in incredibly small areas, even down to the single ion.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pumpkin was created by moving the beam over the surface of the semiconductor and imaging with electrons. What you can see is actually the damage created by the beam smashing into the surface. The pumpkin measures 40 \u03bcm \u2013 smaller than the width of a human hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/maddison-coke\/\" id=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/maddison-coke\/\">Maddison Coke<\/a> is an Experimental Officer at The University of Manchester\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/ngi\/\" id=\"https:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/ngi\/\">National Graphene Institute<\/a>, and a Senior Technical Specialist for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/name-pg.uk\/\">Nanoscale Advanced Materials Engineering<\/a>\u00a0(PNAME). She and <a href=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/mason-adshead\/\" id=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/mason-adshead\/\">Mason Adshead<\/a> (PDRA) are the duo behind aligning the beam and implanting the ions needed to create the pumpkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe normally use this design making software to make markers such as crosses or numbers,\u201d Maddison explains, \u201cbut we do sometimes have time at the end of the day to implant more intricacy to demonstrate the control of the beam in more complicated designs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maddison is mainly lab based, where she is involved with the operation and optimisation of the system.
