{"id":4497,"date":"2022-03-08T09:14:15","date_gmt":"2022-03-08T09:14:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/?p=4497"},"modified":"2026-02-05T10:31:30","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T10:31:30","slug":"international-womens-day-the-scientists-and-engineers-who-inspire-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/2022\/03\/08\/international-womens-day-the-scientists-and-engineers-who-inspire-us\/","title":{"rendered":"International Women&#8217;s Day: The scientists and engineers who inspire us"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/\">International Women&#8217;s Day<\/a> (8 March) is both a celebration of women&#8217;s achievements and a vital call for action towards equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual event encourages us to #BreakTheBias and strive towards a gender-equal world, free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the fields of science and engineering there can be little doubt about the scale of the challenge we face, and the considerable work needed, to make this a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An army of women, though \u2013 past, present and future \u2013 are leading the charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we ask scientists across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.se.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Faculty of Science and Engineering<\/a> (and beyond) about the women who inspire them most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elif Turk: \u00d6zlem T\u00fcreci<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elif&#039;s inspiring female scientist\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jHfJLKa3Ons?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Elif, a second-year mechanical engineering student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.se.manchester.ac.uk\/mae\/\">Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering<\/a> who also runs the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WESUniofManchester\/\">Women in Engineering Society Manchester<\/a>, has chosen the German physician, scientist and entrepreneur \u00d6zlem T\u00fcreci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A pioneer in the field of vaccines, T\u00fcreci co-founded the biotechnology company BioNTech. Importantly, she and her team were able to develop the first messenger RNA-based vaccine \u2013 crucial in the long-running battle with COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aneeqa Khan: Technically Speaking podcast team<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Aneeqa&#039;s inspiring female scientist\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3e8NeW3XdqM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/aneeqa.khan\">Dr Aneeqa Khan<\/a> is a research fellow in nuclear fusion within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harwell.manchester.ac.uk\/\">The University of Manchester at Harwell<\/a>. Her selection is not one person but a whole team \u2013 the one behind the fantastic <a href=\"https:\/\/techspeaking.podbean.com\/\">Technically Speaking podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A diverse collection of scientists and engineers, the team comes together to apply their critical thinking skills to just about anything. As they say themselves, they&#8217;re sometimes funny, often opinionated, and always entertaining!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Khan has also appeared on the Faculty podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/category\/the-buzz-podcast\/\">The Buzz<\/a>, where she helped us answer the question: What is the future of nuclear energy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Katie Downes: Rosalind Franklin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Katie&#039;s inspiring female scientist\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hk7aKDhvt5c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For Katie Downes, a PhD student in cell biology and member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/haveyouhearduk.com\/\">Have You Heard? podcast<\/a> team \u2013 a project aiming to spark discussion about what science is, how it makes it to our newsfeeds, and how we should interpret it \u2013 the choice had to be Rosalind Franklin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Best known for her work uncovering the structure of DNA, Franklin was an English chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose work was also central to the understanding of molecular structures of RNA, viruses, coal and graphite<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katie has also featured on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/science-engineering\/category\/the-buzz-podcast\/\">The Buzz podcast<\/a>, when we asked the question: Should we trust all science news?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sophie Daniel: Imogen Napper<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sophie&#039;s inspiring female scientist\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fDZAzvBMg38?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sophie is a PhD student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.materials.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Department of Materials<\/a>, who has a background in fashion and whose current research looks at how we can remediate plastic pollution in the oceans. Her favourite female scientist is Dr Imogen Napper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A postdoctoral researcher at the University of Plymouth, Dr Napper&#8217;s fascinating research looks at microplastics found atop
