To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day<\/a> on 8 March 2021, we are sharing inspirational stories from staff and students across the Faculty of Science and Engineering, showing what they #ChooseToChallenge in their roles at the University.<\/h3>\n

\"Picture<\/h3>\n

Clea Dronne<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is a physics student\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0her second year<\/span>\u00a0of an undergraduate degree<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>s she\u00a0<\/span>enters the\u00a0<\/span>second\u00a0<\/span>semester,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>she notices something new (and it\u2019s not the online learning)<\/span>: \u201cI am finally doing a course being taught by a woman! The first one. That says a lot, I think.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cleaky pipeline\u201d, as Clea calls it, is a well-known phenomenon in science, technology, engineering<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and maths (STEM) subjects. The further up the educational and career chain you go, the fewer women you find.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Many reasons are cited for this happening, some of which Clea notes as influencing factors for her.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When\u00a0<\/span>she<\/span>\u00a0joined the University, she instantly noticed t<\/span>he l<\/span>ack<\/span>\u00a0of women around her<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cI remember being very shocked the first time I looked around me in a lecture theatre. I think\u00a0<\/span>only<\/span>\u00a0about 25%\u00a0<\/span>were\u00a0<\/span>girls.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>In fact,\u00a0<\/span>data from the\u00a0<\/span>institute of P<\/span>hysics\u00a0<\/span>for 2017\/18\u00a0<\/span>showed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that just\u00a0<\/span>2<\/span>4<\/span>% of\u00a0<\/span>new\u00a0<\/span>physics\u00a0<\/span>undergraduates\u00a0<\/span>were women<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women in Engineering and Science Society<\/h3>\n

That lack of representation, and the lack of role models for women studying STEM, is something she wants to try to address in her role as chair of the Women in Science and Engineering Society (WISE)<\/a>. \u201cWomen lack role models\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>so while\u00a0<\/span>we can’t\u00a0<\/span>ask<\/span>\u00a0the University to employ more women,\u00a0<\/span>we can<\/span>\u00a0try to\u00a0<\/span>shine a<\/span>\u00a0light on some of the women\u00a0<\/span>who<\/span>\u00a0work<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>at<\/span>\u00a0the University or in industry.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

WISE have\u00a0<\/span>actively met this lack of representation head-on<\/span>\u00a0by reaching out to\u00a0<\/span>industry and inviting\u00a0<\/span>women in to<\/span>\u00a0deliver virtual talks to their members, and\u00a0<\/span>Clea\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0passionate about extending this into outreach to local schools<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Most<\/span>\u00a0of the time<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0when you ask a kid to tell you the name of a famous scientist, they’re not going to say\u00a0<\/span>the name of a woman<\/span>, but<\/span>\u00a0always\u00a0<\/span>the name of a man<\/span>. I<\/span>\u00a0think that one of the ways to\u00a0<\/span>improve this<\/span>\u00a0is talking to them<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and giving them\u00a0<\/span>someone<\/span>\u00a0they can look up to.\u201d So far this\u00a0<\/span>hasn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0been possible due to COVID, but Clea<\/span>\u00a0is hoping to stay on as the president of WISE and\u00a0<\/span>begin outreach activities next year. And what better role models to\u00a0<\/span>take into schools than the young women\u00a0<\/span>of the\u00a0<\/span>U<\/span>niversity\u00a0<\/span>just starting their scientific careers?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clea’s future career plans<\/h3>\n

For\u00a0<\/span>Clea<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0own career, s<\/span>he came to Manchester with\u00a0<\/span>a clear\u00a0<\/span>plan\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>do a PhD and go into research<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>b<\/span>ut\u00a0<\/span>she\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0since changed her mind:\u00a0<\/span>\u201ct<\/span>he statistics are already bad at undergraduate level on how many women study it<\/span>\u00a0[physics]<\/span>, and then it gets even worse at PhD, and even worse\u00a0<\/span>again\u00a0<\/span>when\u00a0<\/span>you look at<\/span>\u00a0permanent positions in universities. There are\u00a0<\/span>very<\/span>\u00a0few<\/span>\u00a0stable<\/span>\u00a0jobs<\/span>, and the idea of years of instability\u00a0<\/span>is not something that I want<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To help with career choices Clea says<\/span>\u00a0more visibility around career prospects for physics graduates, especially women<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0would be helpful. But despite all this, Clea still plans to use what she\u2019s learned in\u00a0<\/span>her<\/span>\u00a0future career:\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>by studying physics in the UK<\/span>\u00a0you are not\u00a0<\/span>restricting yourself. There\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>actually so<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>many things<\/span>\u00a0you can do with it.\u00a0<\/span>For example,\u00a0<\/span>I’m<\/span>\u00a0really interested in working in energy just because it’s a field that’s\u00a0<\/span>changing so much at the moment<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0I feel like there’s so much that could be done out there<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>B<\/span>ut\u00a0<\/span>I’m<\/span>\u00a0also really interested in technology – I did a programming module last semester and I really enjoyed it, so I do see myself doing that.\u201d And whatever Clea ends up doing, advancing women in STEM<\/span>\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0going to be a\u00a0<\/span>key\u00a0<\/span>part of that: \u201cwhatever I do, it is a cause that is very close to my heart and I will always be doing work on that.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And what about the reaction she gets from people when she says\u00a0<\/span>she\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>hysics student? Does she think being a woman makes a difference there? Clea says she doesn\u2019t think so<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>f<\/span>rom what I’ve seen, people kind of react the same way. Whether\u00a0<\/span>you\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0a boy or a girl, most people are\u00a0<\/span>simply\u00a0<\/span>horrified that you study\u00a0<\/span>p<\/span>hysics because they hated it in school<\/span>!<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
