I hate\u00a0the idea that something I can&#8217;t see could\u00a0do me harm, even do enough harm to kill me! But there are plenty of other things in life that can be bad for me if I get too much of them. We&#8217;re told sitting in the sun for too long, or too many glasses of\u00a0wine can cause serious damage to our bodies.\u00a0I guess the question is: how much is too much? Is it like wine where there&#8217;s a comfortable middle ground of \u2018\u2019just-enough-to-make-me-mellow\u2019\u2019 without the overindulged \u2018\u2019oh-dear-I&#8217;m-going-to-be-sick\u2019\u2019?!<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately there\u2019s no definitive answer. It\u2019s certain that large doses of radiation can cause cancer, and middling doses cause fewer cancers. But is it a linear relationship? In other words, is no radiation the best case? Of course <strong>no<\/strong> radiation is impossible, with background radiation from space, the ground and even the air. But there\u2019s growing research to show that radiation in <strong>low<\/strong> doses can actually be helpful. This is called Hormesis. There have been studies showing that states in the US where nuclear testing has occurred have fewer cases of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1525730414002277\">lung cancer<\/a>. And there is evidence that low amounts of radiation could be very beneficial for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20726708\">diabetic sufferers<\/a>. But these are contradicted\u00a0by trials showing no <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nap.edu\/openbook.php?record_id=11340&amp;page=332\">beneficial effect<\/a>.\u00a0There are still many questions as to the\u00a0beneficial effects, with long term health impacted by a multitude of factors, which make this sort of study very difficult to &#8216;control&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>While there seems to be progress there\u2019s no definitive answer.
