To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day<\/a> on 8 March 2021, we are sharing inspirational stories from staff and students across the Faculty of Science and Engineering, showing what they #ChooseToChallenge in their roles at the University.<\/h3>\n

\"Natalie<\/p>\n

When most of us go to university to study our chosen subject, it is usually with a view to working in a related industry after we graduate. But Natalie Parish,\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>Technical Estates Co-Ordinator & Workshop Manage<\/span>r<\/span>\u00a0in the Department, decided this wasn\u2019t for her. After studying English and working in publishing, she made the switch to\u00a0<\/span>engineering<\/span>\u00a0by enrolling in\u00a0our\u00a0<\/span>Technical Apprenticeship programme<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drawing inspiration from her grandma, who was a turner on a lathe after the Second World War (\u201cshe\u2019s a real character\u201d, she says), Natalie returned to study at age 25: \u201cI was looking for on-the-job training to learn a trade, and the apprenticeship gave me the chance to pursue my interest in\u00a0<\/span>science and\u00a0<\/span>engineering\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Natalie enjoyed her training but found that she was only one of two women enrolled on the programme<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0with a diagnosis of dyscalculia (dyslexia but with numbers) she sometimes found\u00a0<\/span>aspects<\/span>\u00a0challenging. However, she persevered through these obstacles and successfully landed a job in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting work at the University<\/span><\/h3>\n

Of her first experience of working with students, she says she was \u201cthrown in at the deep end and was teaching classes to students from the start\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile I had received excellent training in the technical elements of the role, I had no teaching experience and quickly came up against some cultural gender related issues.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the male students didn\u2019t want to speak to me because I was a female technician, but this was balanced out by female students feeling much more comfortable\u00a0<\/span>in my presence<\/span>. I understood\u00a0<\/span>this<\/span>\u00a0was down to gender roles within their\u00a0culture\u00a0but it wasn\u2019t something I had<\/span>n\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0prepared myself for\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While Natalie<\/span>\u00a0feels she<\/span>\u00a0is now recognised without reference to her gender, she sometimes\u00a0<\/span>still has to challenge instances of sexism as a woman in\u00a0<\/span>engineering: \u201c<\/span>quite often external contractors ask<\/span>\u00a0to speak to \u2018the manage<\/span>r\u2019\u00a0<\/span>when I<\/span>‘m stood in front of them<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>There have been occasions where my\u00a0<\/span>colleagues\u00a0have<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0direct people back to me after being given my contact details. After one\u00a0particular incident\u00a0they apologised and\u00a0said<\/span>\u00a0\u2018it\u2019s usually a man\u2019. He then kept asking my junior colleague about the issue while I was there, instead of me, and continuously referred to me as \u2018she\u2019 and \u2018her\u2019, rather than speaking to me directly.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Natalie<\/p>\n

Standing up for women<\/span><\/h3>\n

Natalie\u00a0<\/span>feels\u00a0<\/span>supported as a\u00a0<\/span>female<\/span>\u00a0working at the University<\/span>, with clear procedures in place to\u00a0<\/span>tackle any issues<\/span>: \u201cI\u00a0<\/span>did report<\/span>\u00a0the incident on\u00a0<\/span>Report and Support<\/span><\/a>, and had an<\/span>\u00a0interview about it,\u00a0<\/span>they provided support and gave me advice on how to follow up with the issue and engage in a discussion with the contractor\u00a0<\/span>while referring\u00a0<\/span>them to the\u00a0<\/span>university’s<\/span>\u00a0dignity at work policy<\/span>. My biggest concern is if one of ou<\/span>r younger female apprentices had<\/span>\u00a0a similar experience it could really knock their confidence. I felt I had to report this as we need to stand up against\u00a0<\/span>such occasions<\/span>\u00a0and pave the way for the next generation of female engineers.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Natalie believes that building strong networks where information, opportunities and praise can be shared is key to supporting gender equality in engineering. Natalie is an active member of the University\u2019s Female Technical Network and has completed the\u00a0<\/span>Aurora women\u2019s leadership training\u00a0<\/span>programme<\/span><\/a>, both of which have given her a support network and a space to discuss and work through gender-based challenges. \u201cAurora has really helped me in my current management role \u2013 it helped to build my confidence and taught me how to be\u00a0<\/span>more active in my\u00a0<\/span>position<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Paving the way to an equal future<\/span><\/h3>\n

And despite being kept very busy by teaching students, managing teams, looking after her three-year-old daughter, and much more, Natalie\u2019s motivation for being involved in these groups is clear: \u201c<\/span>I know when I raise my voice, what I say is heard – we must continue to learn from women’s experiences to pave the way for a<\/span>n equal\u00a0<\/span>future<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>We come from a strong line of women who have done the\u00a0ground work\u00a0and we must continue to<\/span>\u00a0stand up for our values and to work towards gender equality in the workplace.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
