{"id":336,"date":"2017-03-13T14:24:14","date_gmt":"2017-03-13T14:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mub.eps.manchester.ac.uk\/graphene\/?p=336"},"modified":"2017-03-13T14:24:14","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T14:24:14","slug":"graphenes-potential-to-revolutionise-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/graphene\/2017\/03\/13\/graphenes-potential-to-revolutionise-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Graphene&#8217;s potential to revolutionise the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week over 100,000 people from across the globe descended on the mobile capital of the world, Barcelona to attend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobileworldcongress.com\/\">Mobile World Congress<\/a> (MWC).<\/p>\n<p>Spanning over 240,000 square meters of exhibition space the MWC is the world\u2019s largest mobile conference allowing businesses the opportunity to showcase the next big thing in mobile technology.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/graphene-flagship.eu\/graphene-experience-zone\">Graphene Experience Zone<\/a> featured the latest innovations from the graphene community, showing developments in composites, energy, sensors, wearables and health to name but a few.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst out in Barcelona one of the most asked questions (other than what is graphene and what can it do?) was <em>why are you her<\/em>e?<\/p>\n<p>My answer: graphene has the potential to revolutionise the world.<\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s first two-dimensional material taken from a lump of graphite was isolated in 2004 by two physicists based at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\">The University of Manchester<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/discover\/the-people\/sir-andre-geim\/\">Andre Geim<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/discover\/the-people\/sir-kostya-novoselov\/\">Kostya Novoselov<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was found to be 200 times stronger than steel, lightweight, flexible, transparent and more conductive than copper (superlatives that will be forever grained in my memory after explaining it to thousands over the four days!).<\/p>\n<p>Due to Andre and Kostya identifying the incredible properties of graphene, they were awarded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/explore\/the-story-of-graphene\/2010-nobel-prize\/\">Nobel Prize in Physics<\/a> in 2010, giving graphene the pedigree status fitting to a material that has the potential to change the world. Developed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bac-mono.com\/\">BAC<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.haydale.com\/\">Haydale<\/a>, the front and back wheel arches have been incorporated with a graphene <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/explore\/the-applications\/composites-and-coatings\/\">composite<\/a> that make the material lighter without compromising on strength.<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn\u2019t stop there. Using graphene can also make an existing material stiffer or more flexible depending on the percentage of graphene used.<\/p>\n<p>In fact using graphene and other 2D materials has allowed researchers to create designer materials that can be tailor-made to a specific purpose without limitations.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps more inline with the theme of the conference, graphene could also be used in mobile phones, due to its flexibility and transparency we could create phones that wrap round your wrist, or we could use graphene to replace lithium ion batteries in mobiles. Doing this could allow us to extend the battery life and charge phones faster.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/graphene\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-267x300.jpeg\" alt=\"FullSizeRender\" width=\"267\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/graphene\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-267x300.jpeg 267w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/graphene\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-913x1024.jpeg 913w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/graphene\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-768x862.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/graphene\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-1369x1536.jpeg 1369w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/graphene\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-1825x2048.jpeg 1825w, https:\/\/www.sites.se.manchester.ac.uk\/graphene\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender.jpeg 1990w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Graphene can also be incorporated into textiles; we could build a charging pad within the fibres of your clothes meaning that you wouldn\u2019t need a charging cable but rather slip your phone into your pocket and charge whilst you\u2019re on the go.<\/p>\n<p>Graphene lends itself to other areas, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/explore\/the-applications\/sensors\/\">sensors<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/explore\/the-applications\/biomedical\/\">biomedical applications<\/a>: cancer treatments and drug delivery, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/explore\/the-applications\/membranes\/\">water filtration<\/a> and gas separation. The beauty of graphene and what makes is so special, is its versatility.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the reason for exhibiting at the MWC was to show graphene\u2019s potential to businesses and how it might offer solutions to industry problems.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the main reasons why the National Graphene Institute (NGI) and Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC- due to open in 2018) were established at The University of Manchester so that academia and industry can work side-by-side to develop graphene into real world applications.<\/p>\n<p>So as the last day came to a close and we packed up our wares, I\u2019d like to hope we\u2019ve planted a seed of inspiration into industry\u2019s mind.
