Game Changers Inspires 200 Young Sustainability Champions at Old Trafford’s Eco Reds Event

In November 2024, the Game Changers team was invited to take part in the Manchester United Foundation’s Eco Reds event at the iconic Old Trafford stadium. The event brought together over 200 pupils aged 10–14 from more than 200 partner schools, each selected as a sustainability champion for their community which represents over 20,000 local school children in Greater Manchester.

Hosted inside the stadium’s legendary suites, the day focused on environmental education, climate action, and practical ways to reduce waste and bring more sustainable actions into schools. Game Changers delivered an interactive textile sustainability workshop, where pupils explored what their clothes are made from, where those materials come from, and the environmental impact of garment production and disposal.

Through engaging activities and real-world examples, pupils learned how to identify materials, understand the concept of fast fashion, and consider how they can recycle, repair or upcycle their clothing more effectively. Many were surprised to learn how synthetic fabrics like polyester—used in most football shirts and a lot of school uniforms—can persist in the environment for hundreds of years.

The event sparked lively discussions and a sense of shared responsibility. With Old Trafford as the backdrop, pupils left inspired to take their learning back to their schools and communities as true Eco Reds champions.
