To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day<\/a> on 8 March 2021, we are sharing inspirational stories from staff and students across the Faculty of Science and Engineering, showing what they #ChooseToChallenge in their roles at the University.<\/h3>\n

\"Picture<\/p>\n

It might seem odd to profile a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>white cis male for International Women\u2019s Day <\/span>but the fight for equality\u00a0<\/span>doesn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0just fall on the shoulders of women, it\u00a0<\/span>takes every member of society to stand up and advocate for equality<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>any men\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0challenging the \u2018norm\u2019 and working to progress women\u2019s rights<\/span> and Prof Giles Johnson<\/a> is one of them<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Giles is Professor<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>E<\/span>nvironmental\u00a0<\/span>B<\/span>iolog<\/span>y<\/span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span>Head of Equality, Diversity Inclusion and Accessibility (EDIA) in the School of Natural Sciences<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>is passionate about EDIA \u201cbecause it matters and because I want to help make Manchester a better place to work\u201d.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>His\u00a0<\/span>own\u00a0<\/span>academic journey was<\/span>, in his own words,\u00a0<\/span>straight forward\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018easy\u2019<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0\u201cI became a tenured lecturer at the age of 28, which was young at the time<\/span>, too young really,<\/span>\u00a0and is essentially unheard of today\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Whil<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0Giles acknowledges his own privilege,<\/span>\u00a0jok<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>o<\/span>bstacles are really not part of the game for\u00a0<\/span>a cis white male<\/span>!\u201d the experiences of some of the women in his family have\u00a0<\/span>spurred<\/span>\u00a0him\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>help\u00a0<\/span>make a difference.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

#ChoosingToChallenge: Issues of inequality<\/h3>\n

Giles\u2019<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0mother<\/span>\u00a0went to university age<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a030<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span>three<\/span>\u00a0children. She completed her PhD the same year\u00a0<\/span>as Giles<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0having combined<\/span>\u00a0raising a family with trying to build a career. She eventually\u00a0<\/span>got\u00a0<\/span>a permanent position, after years on short-term contracts,\u00a0<\/span>but<\/span>\u00a0had to sacrifice\u00a0<\/span>much\u00a0<\/span>to achieve this. <\/span>Giles\u2019<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>wife\u00a0<\/span>left\u00a0<\/span>science after completing a PhD\u00a0<\/span>coinciding with\u00a0<\/span>having\u00a0<\/span>two<\/span>\u00a0children<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>he realities of academic career structures put her off. Most recently<\/span>\u00a0Giles\u2019<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>daughter decided to reject the option of a PhD in physics because\u00a0<\/span>it seemed<\/span>\u00a0her academic dreams were incompatible with her desire to have a settled family life.\u00a0<\/span>Seeing\u00a0<\/span>women deterred from science or progressing their careers because of simple barriers are exactly the reason that\u00a0<\/span>so much equality work exists.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While society has come a long way from where it was,\u00a0<\/span>Giles\u00a0<\/span>comments<\/span>\u00a0that \u201ca<\/span>cademic life can be very macho<\/span>\u201d<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0competitive behaviour is looked upon favourably and\u00a0<\/span>there is pressure to\u00a0<\/span>be<\/span>\u00a0locally, nationally, and internationally\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>successful<\/span>\u201d according to some narrow definitions of success<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>This<\/span>\u00a0approach is at odds with the fact that<\/span>\u00a0the best academic work\u00a0<\/span>usually\u00a0<\/span>comes<\/span>\u00a0from collaboration and exchanging\u00a0<\/span>ideas<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Despite this,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Giles\u00a0<\/span>notes<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0there has been\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>significant improvement\u00a0<\/span>in supporting cross-collaborative work\u00a0<\/span>during his time\u00a0<\/span>at<\/span>\u00a0Manchester.<\/span>\u00a0There is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0growing recognition of the importance of diversity\u00a0<\/span>at work\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>there is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>support for<\/span>\u00a0creating an atmosphere where people are recognised for what they contribute<\/span>\u00a0rather than<\/span>\u00a0conforming to a particular stereotype.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Removing barriers\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and supporting women\u2019s career<\/span><\/span>\u00a0progress<\/span><\/span>ion<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

T<\/span>his is why<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Giles<\/span>\u00a0is working<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>as part of\u00a0<\/span>a team\u00a0<\/span>drawn\u00a0<\/span>from across the Faculty,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>towards<\/span>\u00a0an application for a Silver Athena Swan award in November 2021.\u00a0<\/span>The Athena Swan<\/a> charter\u00a0<\/span>was set up to\u00a0<\/span>addresses gender equality in science, technology, engineering,\u00a0<\/span>maths,<\/span>\u00a0and medicine (STEMM)\u00a0<\/span>and \u201c<\/span>challenges\u00a0<\/span>us to own the issues of inequality<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0mak<\/span>es us<\/span>\u00a0look at the\u00a0<\/span>numbers<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to understand the problem and seek to improve on what we do<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Th<\/span>rough the charter, the<\/span>\u00a0University\u00a0<\/span>is improving<\/span>\u00a0its gender equality, and i<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0starting to look more critically at\u00a0<\/span>the language<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>use<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0in job adverts,\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>career progression of staff and representation in the student body.<\/span>\u00a0Giles explains;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cw<\/span>e are currently piloting a scheme of positive action in recruitment which could have a real impact on the mixture of people coming into the University, but we need to make sure that career progression is supported with better line management, proper implementation of flexible working practices and a promotions system that fully recognises the different ways in which individuals contribute to the institution<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The covid-19 pandemic and gender inequality<\/h3>\n

This recognition of where improvements need to be made has never been more pertinent that in the last year.\u00a0<\/span>The COVID-19 pandemic has<\/span>\u00a0laid bare the\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>tark realities of gender inequality<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and has\u00a0<\/span>added a whole new dynamic to the challenges faced by much of\u00a0<\/span>the University<\/span>\u00a0community, especially those with protected characteristics<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>here is mounting evidence that women have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic,\u00a0<\/span>which has been\u00a0<\/span>noted<\/span>\u00a0in the University\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0COVID-EDI survey.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on how the institution has responded to the impacts of the pandemic<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Giles says,<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span>i<\/span>f I w<\/span>ere<\/span>\u00a0marking us as an institution, I would probably be writing<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>g<\/span><\/i>ood effort but with some\u00a0<\/span><\/i>weaknesses<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Lockdown has resulted in an incredible increase in workload for many people across the University. Understandably, there has been a particular focus on making sure we continue to do the best we can for our\u00a0<\/span>students\u00a0<\/span>but<\/span>\u00a0s<\/span>ometimes this has meant that staff feel forgotten<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Giles feels that the<\/span>\u00a0most important things we can really offer are short-term support where needed but long-term<\/span>\u00a0strategies for<\/span>\u00a0mitigat<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0the impacts on people\u2019s careers<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>i<\/span>t is really important that we do things to\u00a0<\/span>lessen\u00a0<\/span>the differential impacts.\u00a0<\/span>There will be a piece of work to carry on with over the next three to five years, but\u00a0<\/span>we are moving in the right direction<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0I hope that we will be successful with our Athena Swan application and demonstrate the great work the Faculty and University is doing to make sure this is a fair and equitable place to work<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
