Today we’re speaking to current undergraduate student Marina Michelaraki about how she’s finding her time here at the School of Chemistry and what tips she has for anyone thinking of studying here at The University of Manchester.<\/p>\n

  1. Can you tell us about your course? What is the best thing about it?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The course includes a wide range of chemistry disciplines.\"\"<\/a> Starting from the first year, a logical sequence is followed in the lessons and their difficulty up to the final year. What I enjoy the most is lab experiments as I apply the theories I have learned and discover in greater depth the science of chemistry. I have familiarized myself with specialized equipment and learned how to interpret practical results in a lab report through research. The best thing about the course is the opportunity to explore a variety of chemistry related fields such as pharmaceuticals, forensics and environmental chemistry and also the necessary knowledge and appropriate experience which is provided for a subsequent career path.<\/p>\n

    1. How is the School of Chemistry helping you through your studies?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The School of Chemistry has helped and guided me throughout my studies in various ways. The structure of the program, the frequent tutorials and workshops and the friendly academic staff are just a few examples of how well organized the department is. Most importantly, the School is very supportive and understanding regarding health or personal issues and provides further advice and support when needed.<\/p>\n

      1. What about the facilities? What do you use as part of your course?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        The University of Manchester has excellent facilities and the campus is fairly organized. It provides students with access to several libraries, one of which 24 hours a day, PCs, study spaces, group study zones and thousands of books of all specialties including rare and digital collections. More specifically, the School of Chemistry is fully equipped with laboratory apparatus. During my studies, I was able to conduct experiments using NMR, IR and EPR machines, the latter being quite rare. The laboratories are spacious and enable students to perform scientific experiments under the conditions of a professional laboratory.<\/p>\n

        1. What is the best memory you have so far of being in Manchester?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
          \"\"<\/a>
          The University and Manchester City Shoppers on Manchester’s Market Street<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

          Manchester is a very lively city, ideal for students. I have many beautiful memories, but thebestones were from my first year when I was still discovering the beauty of this city. I have met people with different cultures and habits, tried food from all over the world, went to museums, parks and parties and this is undoubtedly the most unique experience I have ever had.<\/p>\n

          1. Do you have any tips for anyone thinking about going to university or studying chemistry?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            You should definitely do it! It is amazing to feel independent and do just what you like. The lectures are quite enjoyable (even the 9am ones!) and you are given the right guidance and support to prepare yourself for your dream job. As for Chemistry, it is a fantastic experience to explore everyday things and understand their function through experiments and research. You are given the opportunity to have hands-on experience in different areas and discover in depth the principles of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. Nonetheless, it is often considered a complex science, so I would recommend to be sure you like it long before you study it.<\/p>\n

            1. Can you tell us about your interests? What do you like to do in your spare time whilst at University?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              The University is quite demanding, however, I try to use my time in the best possible way. I enjoy arts so I play the piano, sketch and dance quite often. Moreover, I like foreign languages and my goal is to learn as many as possible. During the weekends, I walk around the city and explore its beauties, museums and parks.<\/p>\n

              1. What\u2019s on the horizon for you? What do you hope to do after University?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                Studying Chemistry at the University of Manchester, I was given the opportunity to explore numerous branches of chemistry. Forensics was one of them, and it captured my interest from the very first moment. After graduating from university, I am planning to proceed in doing a Master\u2019s degree in forensic science, discover all the aspects of the field and specialize in one of them. Furthermore, I intend to find a job as a forensic scientist or study for a PhD.<\/p>\n
